Had a great day. Mom and Dad came to visit this afternoon and the whole thing played out like a Nintendo commercial. Last time my Dad became completely hooked on the Wii when they were here just before Christmas. This time, he and I finally convinced my Mom to give it a try.

The scene in my living room today.

I'm not even making this up. She LOVED it. We played Wii Sports almost all afternoon and they would have stayed over night if I didn't have to work early tomorrow morning. Mom got so into Bowling, I couldn't believe it. By her 4th frame she totally got the interface and started kicking butt. Within a game she was beating my Dad consistently and by the time they left she'd beaten me a couple times as well.

I actually think they want to buy the system when more become available in stores. I'm so very amused by this. Nintendo's goal of involving non-gamers into video games is so very real to me now. I've read articles and watched videos of it but seeing it happen first hand was awesome.

You have to understand how big a deal this is. Mom and Dad don't understand e-mail or websites, never use the internet and the last computer they bought was a Commodore 64. Dad likes Tetris and Bookworm (though I have to set it up for him). On the other hand, Mom has never even given a wayward glance to a video game. Watching her doing a little dance every time she got a Strike in bowling was pretty amazing. When she got a Turkey (3 Strikes in a row) and then another two Strikes later in the same game, Dad and I realized she was a serious threat:

Mom kicks our butt. Slight irony = Sony television.

My parents finally understand the joy of video games. Thanks Nintendo!

Same thing happened with my folks. My mom kept on wanting to play golf. It was great.

That is so awesome!

I told my parents that once I bought one, I'd bring it up and show them. They still think video games are dumb, but there's just too much evidence that suggests they'll dig it. :)

They will probably like it a whole bunch, just don't force any particular one on them. I found that it's more natural if they're picking what they want and discovering elements as you guide them rather than pushing them towards it full force. Getting my Dad hooked was easy and then he helped me lure Mom into trying it. Getting her to play it right off the bat probably wouldn't have been possible.

Once I realized Bowling was a big hit we gravitated around that for quite a while. They tried Golf, Baseball and Bunny Hunting in Rayman but Wii Bowling was the ace for them.

Nintendo: Bringing families together, one Wii at a time.

Hahaha. In an odd sort of coincidence, my mother started playing video games when she saw my brother and sister and I playing games on the old C64. I still remember her peering over my brother's shoulder, and the conversation that followed:

Mom: "...so....is that...fun?"
Brother: "Yeah"
Mom: "It looks kind of like it would be"

And then time slowed to a crawl as I watched my brother turn around, say "Here, you wanna try?" and hand over the joystick.

What followed was about eight years of fighting with my MOTHER over who's turn it was to play on the computer. :/

Last spring, my mother bought a kayak. For Christmas, my dad got my mother an iPod Shuffle. If my parents ever got hooked on something like the Wii, I think my head would explode... I already worry that my mother is cooler than I am...

Love the split screen Mii makeovers!

My best friend Ashley got hooked off of Rayman and she hated video games before that. Something about dancing bunnies I guess....

I was having a hard time picturing this when you described it at Christmas and now that I see it, I have to admit it stills look very odd.

However, your dad did speak about it with enthusiasm (ENTHUSIASM! O.o) when I asked him about it. I think the world might be on its way to economical demise because of Nintendo, as people of the world spend all their time addicted to cartoony sporting games.

I still don't have one. :( It's slowly starting to upset me.

You should x-post this to nintendo_wii. :)

My mom played against my nephews and nieces over the Christmas holidays. She called me a couple of days ago to find out how many controllers I thought she would need if she bought a Wii.

This is the same woman that badgered me for years with the "video games are a waste of time" line. I think Nintendo sprayed water-soluble crack all over the Wiimotes.

I don't understand. Wouldn't they just be as excited as if they actually went bowling?
(Anonymous) on January 9th, 2007 09:12 pm (UTC)
Possibly...
It is possible that they would have just as much fun bowling for real, however, if they're like my mother at all, with arthritis, even a 9lb or even 6lb ball is difficult to use. Plus, like any video game, it makes it at least a little easier than the real thing. My mother doesn't bowl anything in real life(anymore), like she can do in Wii Bowling.

No, because I can't get scores like that in a real game of bowling!
